The first gameplay trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 is here! The next leap forward for the long-running franchise continues to push the envelope, creating incredibly lifelike visuals that blur the lines between gameplay and cinematic. Let’s dive into the trailer and the extra info NetherRealm Studios shared during Summer Game Fest 2023!

While the initial reveal introduced us to our first handful of fighters, the gameplay trailer gives more insight into their motivations and playstyles. Following the events of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, the Fire God Liu Kang restarted history in hopes of creating a more peaceful era. To ensure Earthrealm is safe from unforeseen threats, he tests the might of a new team of champions.

Scorpion and Sub-Zero are now siblings and both part of the Lin Kuei, fighting for the future of their clan. We also meet twin sisters Kitana and Mileena while the latter struggles with a lethal disease that has caused a rift between the two. While Raiden may be a mortal in this timeline, he still maintains a strong will and impressive control of thunder and lightning. Kung Lao returns with his iconic blade-bearing ensemble and willingness to do what is right. Johnny Cage is as skilled as he is confident. Thankfully, his heart is in the right place. Kenshi Takahashi returns to the series as he searches for his family blade, Sento.

The trailer also highlights the new Kameo Fighters system. Kameo Fighters are “klassic versions” of characters throughout Mortal Kombat history. Players can access additional offensive and support-based moves alongside Fatal Blows, Fatalities, and Breakers. You can extend combo strings you couldn’t pull off alone or get yourself into more optimal positioning using your Kameo Fighter.

While some Kameo Fighters are exclusive to this new system, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon confirmed that players can use the same playable character as a Kameo Fighter. Why mix fire and ice with a Scorpion and Sub-Zero duo when you can double down and play with Sub-Zero squared? The player is free to pick their pairing to fit their ideal playstyle.
