During the latest Kombat Kast for Mortal Kombat 1, NetherRealm Studios unveiled an action-packed trailer that dives into the reinvented story of the Lin Kuei. We also get our first look at playable characters Smoke and Rain alongside a new batch of Kameo Fighters. The hype train for the latest entry in the Mortal Kombat franchise kontinues full steam ahead.

While initially a part of Liu Kang’s team of Earthrealm defenders, it looks like Sub Zero and Scorpion had other ideas in mind. Instead of being a part of the team, they move forward with their own squad of super ninjas with a new addition: Smoke! The gray ninja is back with his iconic catchphrase, a new set of threads, and some deadly new moves. Smoke isn’t the only returning fighter we see during this trailer. The water-wielder, Rain, makes a welcome appearance. He is not messing around with the Lin Kuei brothers. Rain’s moveset focuses on his new staff, creating an all-new take on the character.

We also saw the new Kameo Fighters Classic Scorpion, MK2 Kung Lao, Cyrax, Sektor, and Frost. The gameplay possibilities with this new system are expanding with every new character unveiled. These are more than straightforward assist characters. Their additional moves can even bring defensive buffs like added armor. 

Attention to detail is paramount here. Classic versions of the characters are more than visual choices. They maintain their earlier movesets, and the special effects match the games they are based on. The combo fatalities, fatal blows, and combo breakers are also unbelievably sick.

Mortal Kombat 1 releases September 19, 2023, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
